CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

A meeting of the directois of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society was held in the secretary's office last evening. Present— Mr J. L. Gillies (President), Courtis, Fester, Bascand, Bourn, .Kirk, and A. C. Pringle. - . . , The President stated that the principal business of the meeting was the question of the drainage of the ground. Some conversation took place on the proposed widening of the bunk at the north end. The chairman doubted whether the Society could afford to do anything this year. * The secretary reported that he had every confidence in floating the proposed £5 debentures to erect a grand stand, but it would be verv useful if the directors gave the public a 'lead; it would be a sort of stunrantee that the directors had a bona fide belief in the early repayment of the loan. The President had put his name down for some.

The. President agreed that this was a good idea, and he hoped that a good proportion of the directors would take tip one or more.

Most of the directors present put down their names as subscribers.

The President reported that the Concert Committee had met and considered the question of arranging New Year concerts. Last year they lost £22 by the concerts, and they thought it unwise in the interests of "the Society to incur such losses. It might have been necessary to arrange these entertainments in the past, but now the duty of providing amusements for the evening could be safely left to private enterprise. The committee therefore Tesolved that so far as they were concerned the New Year concerts should not be held next year at all events. Also, that Mr Gunn be thanked for holding the theatre at the disposal of the Society for the New Year concerts, with the hope that if the concerts are revived in future he will extend the same courtesy to them.

The President reported- "that he had quoted £3 3s to the Rugby Union as the charge for a football match on the 22nd inst.

The question of draining the ground more satisfactorily was gone into. Mr Gil'ies stated that' the 3 and 4-inch pipes now in had been tested, in several places, and they were found to be choked with clay. It was recommended to lay 6-inch pipes in place of the 4-inch, and "lay them deeper and with a better fall and some cross-lines of 4-inch, would cost about £IOO. To lift, clean, and relav the present pipes might be done for £3O or £4O. The pipes are now laid all round the ground at the foot -of the asphalt track, and it was explained that the clay washed down and filled the pipes before the track was tarred.

The question was discussed at length, and from various points of view, and eventually it was decided to hold over any action till after the next sports meeting, and that it be taken in hand, if at all, before harvest.

Mr Pringle wished to see the running tracks top-dressed and improved, and this work was referred to the Ground Committee.

Some accounts amounting to about £ll were passed for payment, and the meeting closed.
