In a burst of water at the Duke United Mine at Maryborough two men named Hill and Rowan were smothered and two others buried ,to their shoulders. They were dug out, and sustained only a few bruises. EXPLOSION AND LOSS OF LIFE. Received 11 p.m., September 12th. . LONDON, September 12. A shell exploded on the Italian warship Marcopolo at Chemulpho, killing four men and injuring sixteen men. Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, September 12. Edwin Thomas, an inmate of the Old Men's Home, was found drowned in a creek near the Home yesterday afternoon. At the inquest, an inmate of the Home j stated that he saw deceased get through a. j fence and plunge into the creek. TThe jury returned a verdict of suicide by drowning while of unsound mind.
CHRISTCHURCH, September 12. Henry Antiss, who was severely buined at Glentunnel on September 3rd, u.'.-d in the hospital to-day.
An inquest was opened to-day respiting the death, which occurred on Saturlav, of the illegitimate child of Caroline Hs-rtz. The child was put into bed with, its mother, who was left 'alone for nlcut twenty minutes. At the end of that period the child was dead. The nedual evidence was that the child was found with
its face flattened on the right side and lips and skin blue, pointing to death fiom suffocation. The inquest was- adjoined; till September 26th, and a post morijn examination will be held., ;
