The weather was glorious and the attendance very large for the first day of the Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting. The following are the results: ' SPRING STAKES (weight for age).; one mile and a half. Gladsome 1 Mr G. G. Stead's Martian........ 2 M* G. G. Stead's Cruciform .... 3 Eight starters. Betting—s to 4 against Lord Cardigan, 4 to 1 TitzGrafton, 6 to 1 Gladsome and Cruciform. EitzGrafton, iollowed by Lord Cardigan, Martian, Cruciform, and Gladsome, made the running into the straight. Passing the St. Leger stand, Gladsome on the outside ran to the front, and after a splendid finish won by a length, Martian beating Cruciform by a- head after a struggle between Mr Stead's pair. Time, 2min 35sec.

There were twelve starters. Betting—-4-to 1 against Mechlin, 7to 1 Bega. Won by four lengths. Time, 4min 20sec. TRIAL STAKES. . The PalmistV 1 Zenda 2 Cato 3

I The field got well away, the order at seven furlongs being—Grand Rapid.', fclaloya and Green Mountain. Haloya went to the front before the six furlong postwas reached, with Renualf close up, and' led into the turn, where the order was — Haloya, Renualf, Famous, Chere Amie, • and Contest. Halpya was first into the . straight followed by Renualf, Contest, Famous, Chere Amie, and Grand Rapids. Opposite the St. Leger stand, Contest shot to the front and a. great finish resulted. Contest won by half a length, Renualf •beating Sunderland by two lengths for third position. Grand Rapids who came 'with a fast finish was fourth. Time lmin 39£ sec. METROPOLITAN WAGERS. SYDNEY, September 10. There was a fair amount of business atthe reading of the Metropolitan card. Fitzgrafton was backed to win JS6OOOO at prices varying from 100 to 4to 100- to 8. Famous was supported to the extent of £4OOO at 100 to 3. Martian-commencing at 100 to 8 finished at 100 to 10, being supported to 1 the extent of £SOOO. Long Tom was supported for the same amount. The closing prices were : —6 to 1 Tartan; Bto 1 Long ,Tom; 9to 1 Abundance; 10 to 1 Martian; 12 to 1 Fitzgrafton; 16 to 1 Chere Amie. Grand Rapids was quoted at 100 to 3. ANTICIPATIONS FOR TO-DAY.
