The only business of note in the betting was .the backing of Grand Rapids for the Epsom Handicap at 6 to 1, and he is now a strong favourite. Famous has receded tov 8 to 1. The tipsters fancy Koopan for the Derby, and St. Simmer, Chere Amie, and Grand Rapids for "the Epsom Handicap. The " Daily Telegraph" tips Grand Rapids, Chere Amie, and St. Simmer.
- SYDNBK" TRAINING NOTES. SYDNEY, September 9. Nightfall was not of much use to Grand Rapids in a seven-furlong spin, done in lmin 32sec. Martian put up a very fine gallop with Cruciform, and appeared to have' the best of the argument. They ran nice furlongs in the excellent time of 2min lsec. Famous registered a grand gallop of seven furlongs in lmin 31isec. THE NAPIER MEETING. Per Press Association. NAPIER, September 9. The following nominations have been received for the' principal event of the Hawke's Bav J.C. spring meeting: KING EDWARD HANDICAP, of 200 sovs; 1 mile and 1 furlong—Mahutonga, General .Average, Submarine, Sir Percival, Shrapnel, Signalman, Stronghold, Ghoorka. Madrigal,' Free Land, Fleka, Gold SeaL Armistice, Waimoe, Siminia. Mr Geo. G. Stead intends to start both C-uciform and Martian in the Weight-for-ace Spring Stakes (one mile and a half), and Grand Rapids in the Epsom Handicap (one mile). Both these races are to be run today, the first day of the Australian Jockey Club's Spring
