To the Editor of. the Tjmaru Herald." Sir,—l notice by tlie report of the South Canterbury Jockey Club Committer .meeting in your issue ol 21st that the to-talisator-receipts at the late race meeting were £539 and expenditure £l7l, .leaving a profit of £368. Had the Club not run the machine themselves, the result -would have be?n —Receipts, 10' per cent, on amount, invested, £528; unpaid fractions, £54; total, £582; expenditure, commission li per cent, (which I understand was-what paid to the late proprietors), £§£>; Govern-, ment tax, 14 per cerit-'V £7a j total, £145, leaving a profit of £437, the Club thus losing £59, and gaining the disapproval cf their patrons, judging.from the everlasting 'growling tliat -is- on. the Ti* maru racecouise, of which the late iii'tetiug was no exception. The ;report shows the gross receipts from, the totalisator to - be£s39; from a rough . calculation. I make it £582, viz., 10 per cent, on £5285. £528; unpaid fractions, £54. This is a matter I have no doubt thj Editor will report on at the wpper time. Expenditure £l7l, deducting the Government tax £79, shows that It cost the £92 to run the . machine themselves, . whereas Messrs Mason and Roberis would have.done •go jfpr £66. I have femitted shillings and pence In all the above calculations. I am,' etc., " NEOPHYTE
