Per Press-Association. • ! AUCKLAND, January 4. S : A telegram from Ksikohe states that a man named Phillip Baker was found dead l with His throat cut in a. boatshed near bis residence at Kerikeri. It is supposed that he committed suicide. ... At |he inquest- into the tram disaster J.*G. ißodgers, superintendent: of repairs, stated that the brakes were inspected every night. J Car No, 39 was thoroughly overand the brakes were thoroughly tested bn November 2nd! It was an unusual but not an unknown occurrence for brakes Ito refuse to act. Further evidence was heard at "the tramway inquiry to-day, witnesses being examined for the company regarding the methods of inspection of -the car brakes, -the graining and duties of motor men and conductors, and the -nightly examination of cars when all defects were made good, rlt was? stated that the cars were periodically .overhauled. The inquest was adjourned till to-morrow.
~ .Mr John Evans, a settler whose dwelling was destroyed by fire on New Year's "Day-,- died at Raglan from shock caused by burns received while endeavouring to save; some of-his goods. At the inquest' the evidence of Dr Sanders .showed that in-ore than one-third of the skin surface ,of the; body was burned, Evans having nothing but a flannel shirt on at the time. A verdict to the effect that death resulted :lrom shock caused byhurns, no blame •being attributable to anybody, was returned; • i ■ NAPIER, January 4. . 3lrs 'Ann Joll, wife of a night watchman at.
