FOOTBALL.
WAIHI IL. V. STAR 11. This match, played at Winchester on Thursday, started late and was further delayed by the captain of the Star and the ball being " damaged" at an early period of the game. After a short spell play was resumed and after some good give and take work Bennet got over the line for the Star, but Bums' shot at goal was a failure. After some open play Star were forced, but •ultimately Burns got over for the Star. Rogers, however, failed to increase the score. At half time the. ball was in neutral territory. On resuming Shalla'rd made one of his old dribbling rushes but was not backed up.: J. Patterson secured a mark, but J.' Deßenzy failed in what seemed an easy shot at goal. In this spell a try secured by Knowles and converted by Houlihan brought the Star's score to 11 to mil, and so matters ended.: The Star backs showed gfod form, but: Waihi failed in combination. Mr D. McCaskill acted as referee and Messrs H. E. Smith and.J. Thomson line umpires, all giving satisfaction.
•WAIMATIf V. MORV.EN. These two teams met on Thursday afternoon at Morven, and a fast and interesting game was played. Waimate kicked off, and for the first twenty minutes play was very even, and both teams showed up well, neither side claiming much advantage. Towards the end of: the' spell.\Morven strongly attacked, and from a good dribbling rush Hanley scored. The kick at goal was a, failure, owing to a good charge by Waimate. The first spell .ended : M6ryen3, Waimate nil. 'On resuming play Waimate afior.ce eomenced a strong attack on th* Morven line which, however, was repelled by Morven forwards. Even play ensued, until Rattray got possession ana roaning stronclv got within a few yards «f titUse before he was oollared. Rodgers took his pass well, and scored neatly for Waimate. The kick from a difficult angl« did not Increase th» score. Prom this »mb the play was fast and exciting, both teams attacking in turn, but no further scorewas made, the game thus ending in a draw. Good form was shown by both teams, those plaving prominently for Morven beingTucker, Forsyth, J.
