TIMARU BOROUCH COUNCIL.

The Timaru Borough Council met in committee on Friday night, to receive reports of officers. BOROUGH ENGINEER. Mr Archer reported that owing to the windy weather, the cleaning of channels, sumps, gutters and streets had occupied more men. than usual.- Various small repairs to channels and footpaths were enumerated ; also tarring and sanding work and' patching of asphalt, and cleaning of channels in back streets. The repair of tfie Mill stveet sewer was now nearly completed. Great credit was due to the foreman, and his men for the way the work had been carried on. Drainage Contract No. 1 was now proceeding a little faster. No. 2 was practically finished, and is good sound work throughout, though the tradesman's " finish" is absent. No. 3 he hopEd would look better. No. 4is making excellent progress so far, and the work is sound and good, though it has not a first-class finish. The footpath in King street south needs a lew yards of filling. For further kerb and channel work, the most urgently required are: Browne street, Rose to Cross street, south side; Heaton street, Stafford street to railway, south side; Turnbull street, three chains; Stafford street, both sides from Woollcombe street to Heaton street; Waiiti road, Wilson to L'eCren street, south •ride ; Sefton and Sarah streets. The yearly •apply of «undri«g should be rendered for, so that Mtimiatao can be framed for next T«*r. As road maintenance is the most s*iport*nt work of th« Council after sanitation, th* Council thould decide how much broken metal th«y can afford, by contract, )or whether they can secure a quarry of their own. and draw from it as required. As Building Surveyor, Mr Archer reported that five building permits had been applied for since last meeting. He also drew attention to the by-laws and Municipal Corporations Act, which he thought; gave the Council uower to prevent removal or reerection of old houses, and the bringing of old houses into the Borough from outside. The Committee recommend (1) that the report be adopted ; (2) that plans and specifications for kerb and channel be adopted ; (3) that a committee be appointed to consider the advisability of purchasing a quarry, and street work generally, to re'port nt next meeting. WATERWORKS INSPECTOR,

Mr Beswick .reported'*that a larjre number of service pipes have had to be taken out anrl lowered, to suit the new concrete channels now being laid down, and a good many stop-cock boxes have had to be raised and made level with the footpaths. The water-race is in'good working order, and the whole length ha? been cleaned out. The winds have made it difficult to keep up a. steadv "upply. but the, reservoir lias been kept well up. although the demand has been heavy through the past week. Repairs and alterations to the race, mentioned in the previous leport. have been put in hand. About 2D ' casks "f cement will be renvred for these. The youth emploved on the water supply is entitled to a ri«e of 2s 6d a week, and he recommended that it- be granted. Th" Committee recommend that the report be adopted. SANITARY INSPECTOR. Mr Pmith reported that he had inspected ten streets (named), and served seven written notices to abnte nuisances. Four verbal notices had been complied with. Insanitary rubbish, such as clenriuss of back yards and fowl runs, in addition to oVI tins, is being tipped over embankments in back streets, presenting an unsisrhtly appearance as well as giving out. a Bad smell. He had disinfected a. tent that had been: used to isolate a fever patient, and also a room in a house where there had been a case of tuberculosis. He had also investigated two cases of infections disease, which were reported by the Health. Department. Christ church. In one case the premises had already been disinfected ; in the. other case the patient Had died in the hospital.
