MAGISTERIAL.
TIMARU—FRIDAY, FEB. 20th. (Before C. A. Wray, Esq., S.M.) CASES ADJOURNED. A summons for neglect to comply with .1 maintenance order was adjourned till March 23rd, at the request of Mr Moore(for complainant), as the money was being paid up. A second ease was adjourned for a week, the defendant writing that lie had sent money, which had not yet arrived. At the request of Mr Perry, for defendant, a suit ia bastardy was adjourned till next Friday, as the matter was being ranged. A CABMAN'S DISPUTE. A cabman, who said he had been 26 years on the ranks and had never been complained of before, was charged with using abusive and insulting language to a. younger har.d in the calling. He pleaded not guilty. It appeared that they had a dispute about their places in the "li'rk at the railway station, and the defendant got off his cab and challenged the other to " come down and settle it." Each party told a different story about their positions, but Constable Perniskie proved that there was a disturbance and defendant was to blame. His Worship strongly reprimanded defendant and cautioned him against such conduct at the railway station, yi_d imposed a fine of 10s. INDECENCY. A lad of 10 pleaded guilty to making an indecent drawing ar.d Meriting obscene 1 words on a fence in Grey road. The of- ' fence was a particularly bad one, so vile that his Worship wondered that so voting a lad could have perpehated it. The boy's mother said his father had tli ashed him -well for it. His Worship remanded the boy till next day, to have the truth of this inquired into, and if it is not cortect. a whipping will be ordered. PROHIBITION ORDERS. Two cases were called on. In one there was no appearance. In the other the defendant begged that the order be not issued, on account of the disgrace it would be to him, and he would li!;c to be spared the humiliation; he would t:'ke the pledge instead. The wife, who made the application, pressed for the order, telling defendant he had taken the pledge many times and it did r.o good. His Worship gi anted the order, and in reply to defendant told him it would come into force at once, and if he even entered hotel premises he would be punished. The wife ;?sked if lie could have just one drink now. because he had not got over his spree and was just dying for ore. The Magistrate l said certainlv not.
