Second in importance only to the great Niagara power plant for generating electricity is one now. being built an the Susquehanna River, at York Haven, Pennsylvania. The power is obtained from the great falls of Susquehanna at that point. The size of the undertaking may be appreciated from the fact that the power-house is nearly 500 it long by 40ft wide, and contains 40 turbine . water-wheels, each of 600 horse-power, with two esciters of 250 horse-power, so that altogether there will be generated a power of just on 25,000 horse-power. From the power-house there is being built a granite wall 3500 ft long and from 26ft to 38ft high. enclosing a race 375 ft wide. Instead of being used like the Niagar plant for supplying the electricity at a distance, however, most of it will be used by industries which are to be located on the spot. The King (says " Marmaduke" in London " Truth") has discovered the secret of perpetual promotion, and therefore has abolished the New Year's honours list Since his Majesty succeeded to the throne scarcely a day passes without some distinction being bestowed, and it would be injudicious to have too many occasion? when large batches of honours are distributed. Those who are behind the scenes at Court are disturbed by the rumour which is current among them that the King will bestow knighthoods generally at the time of the Coronation. Some have it that many, if not all, of the Mayors in Great Britain will be knighted, while baronetcies and knighthoods are to be poured upon the colonists. The policy of increasing considerably the number of holders of ihe smaller and non-continuous honours was greatly favoured by the late Queen during the latter part of her reign, and King Edward is said to be of the same mind as ires hei-Maj*iT in this matter.
