COMPLIMENTARY BANQUET AT DUNEDIN.
DUNEDIN, March 10. The banquet tendered by the citizens of Dimedin to the Premier in recognition of his services to the Imperial cause prior to his departure for the coronation • ceremonies, was held in Victoria Hall to-night, about, 150 persons being present. The Mayor (Mr." Denniston) presided, and the truest of the evening was on his right with Sir J. ; G. Ward on his left. . Members of the Legislature -were present. The Mayor in proposing the toast of the evening, said that he to no man in his appreciation of the qualities of mind and distinguished services of the Right Hon. Mr Seddon in Imperial matters. ; lie occupied proud position—the doyen., among colonial premiers. The Mayor •went on to eulogise the Premier's services and snid that he deserved a place in the Councils of the Empire. He concluded, "by ■wishing him a pleasant and successful mission and a safe return. The Premier, on rising to reply, Ea'3 a great ovation, the company rising and
'was his watchword. - In doing what was done he and those associated with him ! believed that they were furthering the best interests of the colony. New Zealand was in the van and New Zealanders vere looked up to. In tendering some advice the Premier complained that the jewspaper articles on the financial position of the colony were used to the disparagement of the colony. Party should :e set aside and patriotism, become the word. Referring to South Africa he said that there was no turning back till freedom, justice, and happiness, reigned supreme. In dealing with the Premiers' Conference he said that he would guarantee the Imperial authorities that New Zealand would subscribe her share to strengthen the-Austral-asian squadron. The Premier said that it was sad to say good-bye, but on this occasion he looked forward to again addressing them.
