'■'fsr Press Association. WANGANUI, February 7. ; The third trial of James Buckingham for alleged perjnry took place to-day. The jury, after ten minutes' retirement, returned a verdict of not guilty WELLINGTON, February 7. In the case of David Dich, charged with arson at Greytown North, the jury was unable to agree, and he was discharged. INTERESTING NATIVE MEETING: ■> Per Press Association. WANGANUI, February 7. . An interesting native meeting concluded at Rata last nigut. About 300 natives were present, representing nearly all the tribes on the West Coast. The Hon. J. Carroii attended on Wednesday, and spoke hopefully of the native race under recent legislation of the Government. Their Maori Councils were in full swing, and the reports cf their work showed a general awakening, and a need for improved social and moral life. A number of important resolutions were passed aiming at widening the powers o-f Councils, so as to embrace impounding, limited judicial power in the matter cf small debts, and minor offences, and limited rating powers. Resolutions were passed last night combatting Mr Pirani's attack on the Maori Land Act, and condemning the attacks of the foreign press on England, and expressing the Maoris' willingness to stand bv the British flag at all hazards.
