SERIOUS FIRE AT PONSONBY
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 26. By a- fire at Ponsonby, Messrs Kelly and Powell's grocery shop was totally destroyed, and the' premises of Mr Owen Pierce, butcher, and Mr Charles John Goodwir., draper, partly destroyed. Messrs Kelly afid Powell lost everything, including thenbooks. Mr Goodwin had £I7OO worth of draperv in stock. Mr Myers, chief officer of the steamer Ngunguru, rented the back portion of Kellv and Powell"s premises as a dwelling, but the family were away from home. Thev lost all. The insurance on Air Goodwin's two-storied shop m the Rc > al was £2OO. The stock and furniture were uninsured, and the estimated loss is £2UOi.. Messrs Kelly and Powell's stock wixs msur.ed for £IOO in the Victoria, and Mvers' furniture effects for £IOO in the ZN ew Zealand. TTie cause of .-the fire is unknown. Hellaby Bros, owned Messrs Pierce. Myers, Kelly and Powell's premises, but his insurances are not available to-night.
