TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Borough Council's Committees met iast night and received the following reports : WATERWORKS.
Mr Beswiek, the inspector, reported an heavy demand, all the large supplies -working long hours, and the 114 new connections made last year had their effect. The baths had been using water heavily. They were refilled on November lutu, and since that date had used an average of 57,000 gallons per day. Much more water had L also been used _in sluicing. He had given notice to consumers to reduce their demands, as the draft on the mains reduces the pressure so much that the water will not rise to the high levels except at night. Mr Evans. of tJie Atlas Mill, rang up to say that the mill could not run for want of pressure. He had given them sufficient to maintain a steady vacuum. The class of condenser used is "very sensitive to variations in pressure, and * this one and another of the same kind should be discarded in favour of one of the old style. The amount of water carried in the race found out several weak places, which will have to be made good when the season is ever. A large stone has cnished a few pipes at one point and joints have gone in a number of places. The men have been kept busy effecting repairs and the water had to fie shut off several times, which caused the reservoir to get low, but this will -soon be pulled up if all goes well. The siphon at Briggs' Gully was running very full, and on looking for the cause he 'found that the culvert from the' delivery end was partly blocked with roots of tree? planted on the water-race reserve. These have been cut out of the culvert and the whole or the trees should be cut down where the roots are likely to get into these deep culverts. The extension of mains in Rhodes' street should be put in hand while the contract for cuttiDg down the street is in hand, and he asked for approval of this being done. Two 2-inch services have been connected with the Farmers' new store as agreed, upon with the; Council. The Waterworks Committee recommend the adoption of the report, and that Mr Evans be informed that he can take a smaller minimum if it suits him to do so. and that the Council cannot guarantee a. steady pressure. They recommend the Council" to gS'into committee " to consider an important matter in connection with the water suttplv." SANITARY.
