view of the splendid response from Australia to the recent request for troops., the Imperial Government would very gladly 'accept another 1000 men on the same terms as those of the contingent which was now being raised. Mr Barton added that he proposed to reply that the Government would without delay comply with the request. In reply to a question Mr Barton said that he had offered to provide transports, hut the War Office expressed a desire to carry out. their own transportation arrangements. Received 1.4 a.m.. Januarv 22r.d.
In the Federal House. Mr Higgius, of Yietorii:- presented a petition bearing 800 asking that the Australian troops be withdrawn from South Africa, and that the Imperial Government be impressed with the importance of arranging peace on terms consistent with these due to an honoured foe.
