THE ENGLISHMEN IN AUSTRALIA. THE THIRD TEST MATCH. United Press Association—Per Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received 8.6 p.m., January 17th. ADELAIDE, January 17. The clouds which threatened rain on Friday cleared away completely, and the weather was delightful. The, attendance numbered 9000, including Lord and Lady Tennyson. MacLaren won the toss, and he and Hayward opened to Trumble and McLeod. Both played cautiously, and the first 10 runs took 20 minutes "to get. The scoring gradually became faster, chiefly at the expense of Trumble, who was trying to tempt Hayward. Noble and Howell were then tried. Off the former MacLaren made a bad stroke, which dropped safely behind square leg. The wicket was slower than usual, consequently it was easy to score on, and the bowling lacked " devil." Howell's off breaks gave the batsmen some trouble, two or three times beating them and the stumps too. Armstrong and Trumper were tried ineffectually before luncheon, when the total was 88—each batsman 43.

Armstrong and Howell resumed bowling after lunch. Off the former's third over Hayward got 10 runs in three hits, making the* total 100 in that number of minutes. At 110 Trunible relieved Howeli. Three runs later MacLaren, when 51, was bowled bv Armstrong with a no-ball, but the batsman did not know it, for he was walking away when lie was called back. Hayward forged ahead of his captain, the Surrey-man making fine strokes all round the wicket. Some of MacLaren's hits were not quite so certain. At 126 McLeod relieved Armstrong, but runs now came rapidly, although the fielding was smart. At 149 MacLaren hesitated about running for his own stroke to third man, and this hesitation cost him his wicket. He had batted .for two hour's and a quarter, and given no chances. His score included seven fours. Tyldesley pottered about for a quarter of an hour, then tried a big hit and skied the ball back to Trumble.—Two wickets for 164 runs. Hayward rather ingloriously ended his fine innings by slogging at a "ball from Noble, which he just touched. It rebounded from the wicketkeeper's hands, and as the batsman was out of his ground lie was run out. He plaved a perfect innings, and was batting for'two hours'so minutes. He hit eleven fourers. At 171 Jessop ballooned a ball to Trumper at long-off, and he judged the catch perfectly. The tea adjournment was then taken, Quaife being 10. Liiley joined Quaife after tea, Trumble and Noble bawling. Quaife j was 20 minutes without scoring. Li ! lev got to work steadily, and when he had j made 10 was missed bv Trumble m the slips off Noble. • The field closed in ( when Quaife faced Noble, but he stonewalled, and drove one ball over the heads of the field to the boundary. At 180 Trumble got Liiley leg-before. Trumble s last twelve overs had yielded seven runs for three wickets. When Braund went m Armstrong replaced Noble. Braund got quickly into double figures, and the second century appeared after three hours 45 minutes' i">lay. The score mounted steadily, chieflv by Eraund's play. At 220 Trumr°r replaced Armstrong, and shortly afterwards Howell gave Trumble a spell. Later on McLeod relieved Trumper. Quaiie displayed slow, chanceless batting kko hours," and Braund dashing play, the fielding being brilliant. The following are the scores : ENGLISHMEN—Ist Innings.
