THE FARMERS' UNION.
A meeting of the executive ol the South Canterbury Faimers' Union juid We committee of the Timuru brancn was held in The Levels Countv Council Chambers on Salnrdfv. There was a full attendance from all parts of South Canterbury. Mr John Talbot occupied the chair Mr Ward, of Waimate, president of the South Canterbury executive-, explained fully tne work that had been done by the AsnburW executive and by the South Canteroarv executive since last meeting. A long and practical discussion ensued on matters of importance to the Union, and a course of action was decided on for the future. The name of, the South Canterbury branch of the Union was altered to Timaru Branch, in view of -South Canterbury being a provincial district. On the motion of Mr Chisholm it was decided that in future monthly meetings be held in Timaru on the second Saturday -in each month, at which only members of the Union may attend, and a sub-committee was appointed to draw up a programme of business for each meeting. Mr Corrigan, of Morven, opened a discussion on the motion passed by the Ashburton Conference re rebate of" rents to Crown tenants, the official .report of which was more nearly correct than the Press report, as the object of the Union was that the rebate should be general and not abolished. This view of the question was unanimously adopted by ,the meeting. Be workers' compensation for accidents, a letter was received from the manager of the Commercial Union informing the Union that the president of the New Zealand executive had accepted the offer of his to insure members of the Union against all risks under the Act at the low rate for. farmers of 5s per cent., and that the secretary of the Union (Mr W. S. Maslin) had been appointed agent for South Canterbury. It was resolved that all members of the Union insure in this office, and regret was expressed that so many had insured at 9s or 10s per cent, in other offices before the business had been settled ia Wellington. It was resolved that Mr Dcnsicrd act as assistant to Mr Maslin in the matter of accident insurance. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Ward, president of the executive, for the trouble he had taken in the interests of the Union.
