Corporal W. J. Byrne was accidentally killed, and Private Thomas Crawford severely wounded at Goldgevonden. Both "belong to the New Zealand Mounteds. Colonel Benson v' 4 the 22nd instant surprised a laager at Tricharsfontein, capturing 37 Boers. He repulsed a heavy rearguard attack by Grobelaar's and Erasmus commandos at Yzervarkfontein.

Colonel Henry expelled . Nieuwliandt's' commando from a strong position at Koflyfontein, and is pursuing them.

RETURNING NEW ZEALANDERS.

WELLINGTON, October 29. The Government is advised that Corporal W. J. Byrne, of the Seventh Contingent, whose mother lives in Christchurch, died at Gennedevouden on October 23rd from a. gunshot- wound in the chest, also that, on October 24th James Crawford, of the Seventh Contingent, who belongs to Waimate, Canterbury, was accidentally and severely wounded in the right forearm, and Alex. Mitchell, of the Seventh Contingent, who belongs to' Pleasant Point, Canterbury, was dangerously ill of enteric fever at Mooi river on October 26th.

The Premier has received the following cablegram from Lord Kitchener at Pretoria :—" October 28tli. The officers and men of the Fourth and Fifth Contingents who wish to do so are returning to New Zealand."
