A DISTINGUISHED VISITOR.

ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION OF GENERAL MACDONALD.

Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL. October 22. Generul Sir Hector MaeDonuld arrived by the Westraliu at daybreak, and was welcomed by Sir J. G. Ward on behalf of the Government. About 50 sat down to breakfast in the saloon of the steamer, including representatives of the Dunedin and Southland Highland Societies, and of local bodies.

The Southland Pipe Band played Sir Hector MaeDonala to the railway station,, where an immense crowd lustily cheered him as the tvaia le!t for Invercargill. On the journey to town the children of various schools, who had been given a holiday, lined up at station:* and cheered. At Invercargill Sir Hector Mac Donald was met by the Mayor and a large assemblage, after which lie met the veterans of the Highland Association, and visited the local institutions.

Sir Hector Mac Donald has had a trying dav in Invercargill, the people's only complaint being that they could not seen enough of him. Large numbers of Highland people came in from the country, and on every appearance in public the General was heartily cheered. This evening a reception was arranged, aud many were introduced to Sir Hector, whose quiet manly demeanour 'ind patient, courtesy in a heavy ordeal were fully appreciated. At a banquet which followed, and is now in progress, there is a large gathering. The toast list is inordinately long, and it looks as if the function will not terminate till 2 a.m. To-morrow the General will visit the town schools, and it is probable that he will alfter all visit Lake Wakatipu before going north,
