THE COMMONWEALTH TARIFF.

Among the industries which will be affected by .the Commonwealth tariff are those connected with fish. Last year this colony sent to Victoria 184,187 dozen oysters at £1530, to Tasmania 43,175 dozen at 5358, and to New South Wales 7630 dozen at £64. This makes 234,992 dozen at £1952 to Australia. The Federal duty is 2s per cwt, and about 40 dozen, we are informed, go to the hundredweight. The total duty on last year's export would consequently amountto £587 9s. Of fresh fish. Victoria took from us 5946cwt at £8328, and New South Wales 2581cwt at £2742, making for the whole Commonwealth 8527cwt at £11,070. The Federal duty at Id per lb or 9s 4d per cwt would be £3979 5s 4d. For potted and preserved fish the fibres are .—New South Wales, 33,7601b at £llßl, Victoria 35,9341b at £lllß, Western Australia 47,7801b at £1464, Queensland 41921b at £136, South Australia 12,3001b at £335. Tasmania 45011b at . £147; Australia 143.4671b at £4381. The Federal duty at 2d per lb would be £1195. New South Wsjes also took 48cwt of dried and salted lish at £6B ; with a Federal duty of 5s per cwt £l2 would be payable on this amount. The returns for Fiji and the Islands are: Fresh fish, lewt at £1; potted and preserved fish, 106,0941b at. £1943; dried and pickled fish, 4cwt at £7. Our export of woollen piece-goods was to New South Wales £5757, to Queensland 804, to Victoria £989, to Western Australia £IBO, to South Australia £35, and to Tasmania £29, that is to Austral £7794.
