TIMARU AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.
The monthly meeting of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Associatilon was held on Saturday. Present;— Messrs C. N. Orbell (president). Guinness, Elworthy, McLaren, Lyall. W. Hay, E. Kelland. E. Talbot, Davie, Austin, D. Grant, Scott, Lowry, Wareing, Rutherford, Bassett, Rhodes, Cunningham, and Parry. Apologies were received from Messrs Mindell and R. Kelland.
The chairman reported that as the rain had freshened the grass wonderfully, the ground committee had decided not to resow fie grounds, which would now be in
good order for the show on November loth and 14th. The sheep pens had not been gone on with, because no suitable timber was available, but they should be erected as soon as possible after the show. —The action of the committee was approved. Mr Mundell wrote, reporting that he and his co-delegate, Mr T. Mitchell, were well received by the Live Stock Committee of the House of Representatives on the Land and Live Stock Auctions Bill. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones undertook to send a number of copies of the evidence taken, when printed, for distribution among members.—A .vote of thanks was passed to Messrs Mundell and Mitcnell for their services as delegates. Mr Robert Hay wrote, asking how it was v that his. name did not appear on the list of honorary members this year.—The secretary said that it was either an oversight on his part or a typographical error. Mr' C. N. Macintosh, secretary to the South Canterbury Traders' Association, wrote advising that the executive of the Association had been authorised to donate £5 5s to the funds of rue A. and P. Association, by way of special prizes. The objects for which the prizes will be given. will be advised after the executive meet. — The secretary had written a reply, pointing out that as. the prize list had been made up for this year, special prizes could not easily be allotted, and asking that the amount be donated to the general prize I fund.—The president and vice-president I were requested to arrange with the j Traders' Association.—Mr McLaren spoke strongly against the Traders' Association treating the Agricultural and Pastoral Association in the same way as sports clubs, etc. It might be all very well to form an Association tolfeheck the demands of these clubs, but the A. and P. Association was on an entirely different footing, dealing with the great producing interests by •which the town lives, and their shows bring extra profits to the townspeople. Mr J. D. Ritchie, Secretary to the Department of Agriculture, wrote that at a meeting, held under the auspices of the I Producers' Union, it was resolved that the Government be asked to call a meeting at an early date of representatives of freezing companies and others interested in kindred industries, for'the purpose of considering matters in connection with the disposal of frozen meat and other produce. The Department therefore asked whether this Association will be represented at the meeting when it is' called, and whether there were any particular sub-
jects the Association wished discussed.— | Some questions were asked as to the standing of. the Producers' Union, and on its being stated that it was started by the Government in opposition to the Farmers' Union, members said if that were so this Association should not support it. On the other hand it was said that the Producers' and Farmers' Unions had agreed to amalgamate, and on this it was resolved that if a meeting of the two Unions were held, this Association would send delegates.
Messrs J. Hole and D. H. Sidey were elected.members of the Association.
The secretary reported the financial results of the late horse parade. The entrance fees, 42 at ss, were £lO 10s. gates £9 lis,- total £2O Is; expenses £3 19s 3d ; net result, £l6 Is 9d. East year the net return was £3 18s.
In reply to Mr Wareing, the Secretary stated that since Mr Simmons started with a £2 2s subscription for special prizes for. horses suitable for mounted infantrv.
nothing had been added to the list.—Collectors were appointed to make up n. fund. 'The committee then proceeded to fill gaps ■in the list of judges.
It was decided to call for tenders for catering and other privileges. The sec-
retary was instructed to draw up a general specification for the catering, to avoid complaints by the public. It was also decided to engage a band, and a hope
was expressed that the band engaged will give more of the music and less drum. • Accounts amounting to £lO 12s 6d were passed for payment.
