AUCKLAND, August 23,

The Coroner held an inquest to-day on the body of a man, name unknown, whose remains were found on 'Waitakerei ranges & few day ago. Dr Symes said that the remains were those of a male adult about 30 years of age, and had been lying there about three years. The jury after hearing the evidence of other witnesses returned a verdict that deceased, whose name was unknown, had committed suicide some time in 1898. PALMERSTON NORTH, August 23. A young man named Harold Knight, aged about 21 years, a son of Mr Thomas Knight, an old settler here, was found dead at his parents' residence this morning. Deceased was shot in the head, and enquiries made by the police showthat the shooting was purely accidental. WELLINGTON, August 23. At the inquest on the death of W. S. Simkin, the Jury returned a verdict of suicide during temporary insanity, brought about by illness and overwork.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 23.

The south express was delayed two hours owing to an accident to a truck attached to the train from Ashburton. The axles broke down, derailing two trucks and a passenger carriage. No one was injured, and the line was quickly repaired.

DUNEDIN, August 23. The man who was killed on the railway is believed to be P. Healey, of Gore. At the inquest on the body of the man who was run over by a train, the evidence went to show that the body was that of Patrick Halley, who has sisters at Temuka and InvercargilL It is surmised that as the train was standing on the street for some time, the deceased attempted to cross over the couplings between two trucks and fell when the train started again. The verdict was that deceased, supposed to be Patrick Halley was killed by the train, and that no blame was attachable to any one.
