After a consultation with the coal owners and a further lengthy debate, the Miners' Conference decided not to strike against the coal tax. THE CZAR. The Czar visits England at the end of August, and then pays a visit of several weeks to Darmstadt. Received 8.56 a.m., May 10th. NAMING A STREET. The Battersea Town Council discussed the names of Joubert and Methuen as the name of- a newly formed street, and decided in favour of Joubert. RESIGNATION. The Emperor of Corea, disapproving of the railway syndicate's loan, the President of the Privy Council has resigned. THREE-TAILED COMET. A three-tailed comet has been photographed at Mauritius, travelling north-west. The length of the longest t:ul is 15 degrees. THE CARNEGIE GIFl'3. Mr Andrew Carnegie has doubled his gift to the English Iron and Steel Institute, for the purpose of establishing a metallurgical research scholarship. Received 12.32 a.m., May 11th. THE NEW GUINEA MURDERERS. The London Missionary Society urge Mr Chamberlain to punish only the .actual murderers of the New Guinea missionaries. THE GERMAN TARIFF. The Agents-General consider that the alteration in the German tariff will scarcely affect Australia. CENSUS RETURNS. The population of England and Wales is 32,525,716; of the county of London, 4,536,034; of other administrative counties, 18,850,492; of country boroughs, 9,139,190. The counties, including other portions of Greater London, show a very large increase in population; while the agricultural counties are stationary or declining. Received 12.41 a.m., May 11th. GERMANY AND GREAT BRITAIN. BERLIN, May 10. A Bill has been submitted to the German Reichstag granting Britain and the British colonies the favoured nation treatment until the end of 1903. I Received 10 a.m., May 10th. - THE KAISER FRIEDRICH. The inquiry into the grounding rf the German warship Kaiser Eriedrich disclosed 1 that the mishap was due to drifting ice having shifted a buoy. PANIC IN WALL STREET. NEW YORK, May 10. The efforts of Mr E. H. Harrison, chairman of the Union Pacific Railroad Company and the Kuhn clique to wrest the Northern Pacific Railroad from Mr Pierpont Morgan and Mr J. J. Hill, a group of speculators, caused an unparalleled panic in Wall Street. North Pacific shares were sold heavily, resulting in an extraordinary bear squeeze. They jumped from 160 to 1000, causing a slump in all other stocks. Standard Oil Company shares declined 161 points, and other stocks 10 to 60 points through the slumping. The market rallied when the leading operators agreed not to enforce immediate delivery of Northern Pacifies which closed at 500, though neither the corner in shares nor the qxiestion of control of the railroad has yet ended.
