SERIOUS FIRE IN DUNEDIN.
Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, April 24. ; A fire "broke out this morning in thq j four-storeyed store of Messrs Laidlaw and Gray, ironmongers. The place is reached by "a right-of-way, and is surrounded by the National Bank, Bank of New Zealand, the offices of the Royal and National Insurance Companies, the Dunedin Club, and other important buildings. The building, which was of brick, was completely gutted, but the brigade appear now to have obtained control, and wil levidently confine it to the store where it started. Fortunately, scarcely a breath of wind was Wowing.
The fire was pt t under by the Ere BrigI ade without damage to the adjoining i premises beyond a window in the Bank of New Zealand. The four-storey building ' -which was gutted was occupied by James Gardner and Co. as a stocking-making factory. so far as the two upper stories are 1 concerned; while Laidlaw and Gray, ironmongers, occupied the lower portion. The > fire appears to have originated in Gardner and Co.'s. The extent of the damage is not known, but the captain of the Fire BrigaSe savs that there will be a good deal of gdvage. The building was owned by the STational Insurance Company, and was_ingnred it is believed in the South British, r Gardner and Co.'s stock is valued at about £3OOO, and was insured in the National for £2OOO. Laidlaw and Gray's stock was valued at about £6OOO, and is insured for £2OOO in a. number of offices.
