A gale aiul torrential rains are causing much damage. The Yarra is higher than for yours, and low-lying suburbs along tho river are flooded. At Abbotsford tho residents had to take refugo in upper storeys. The rain is seriously delaying the Federal decorations. Some stations up country record as high as six iiuhes of rain in twenty-four hours. Tlio rivers are in high flood, and there have been many railway wasli-aways. A bridge was washed away on the Korumburra line, and passengers were taken from the township in boats. The village settlement! of Koowoerup and the township of Moo are under water. Three bridges were destroyed
ato Warribee. A man and his son, named White, who were camped near tlio river, were drowned. The Government Astronomer predicts worse floods in the Yiirro than in 1891. Stormy weather provails along the coast, and the shipping is sheltering. Received 9.26 p.m., April 24th. T?liere is general interruption of the telegraph! lines owing to the gale. The steamer Melbourne has arrived from Newcastle. She reports that a hurricane is raging all down the coast. Everything moveable was swept away. HOBART, April 24. Tempestuous weather and hejivv lain prevail throughout the island.
