The four mounted rifle companies, Canterbury, Malvern, Waimakariri and North - Canterbury, accompanied by the E Battery with six guns, put in some excellent work during the holidays. The column numbered about 200, and was commanded by Captain Snow, Canterbury Mounted Kfles. It left Christchurch on. Friday morning, working that day on the Port HHls, camping on Friday and Saturday sight at Governor's Bay, where more good was done on the hilly country on Saturday. On Sunday it marched round to Lyttelton r camping there till Monday morning, when it left for Christchurch by -way ofi Sumner. The work done by the Battery was specially good, the guns being taken to seemingly inaccessible positions.
