The Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting opened to-day in fine weather. Between 4000 and 5000 persons were present The sum of £16,743 was passed through the machine, as against £14,964 for the first day last year. The following are the results: — ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP. Melwood was first away, and led for a couple of furlongs, when he gave way to Spider, who carried on the running to the turn, when Melwood came again, and won easily by a length and a half. Time, lmin 44sec. Dividend, £4 lis. MAIDEN PLATE. Fashion 1 Cadet 2 Laurestina 3 Scratched—Kohinui and Sabreur. Won easily by three lengths. Time, lmin 43 4-ssec. Dividend, £2 12s. WELLINGTON CUP. Renown (Davis) 1 Coeur de Lion (Whittaker) * Paladin (Radcliffe) * Boreas and Ideal were scratched for the Cup. Also started—Meteor.- The latter -was left at the post. . Menschikoff jumped away, -with the lead and won all the way by six lengths. Time, 49sec: Dividend, £1 9s. PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Cameo 1 Queen's Guard 2 Strathnairn 3 Scratched Blazer and Laurestina. Strathnairn and Queen's Guard led into the straight, where the latter appeared to be coming away, but Cameo came with a wet sail and won by a length. Time, Ittijti 56 3-sth sec. Dividend, £3 14s.
