As the express train conveying the troopers lor the north passed opposite the wharf the barque Criffel flew the signal, "Success to You," and dipped her flag in salute. - The Left Division of the South Canter- - bury Mounted Rifles fall in at the Post Office to-morrow to meet Trumpeter Bowie, and the Right Division at Temuka drill shed at 5.15 p.m. to meet Trooper Fraser. Trumpeter Bowie is the first member of the First Contingent to return to Timaru, and well deserves the most hearty of wel : comes. The band which played .the Transvaal troopers away last night was a scratch one got together by Messrs F. and W. Hawkey. The instruments and music were kindly lent by the Salvation Army, who came forward in the emergency. Neither of the other bands evidently had received orders to turn out. Corporal Cabot and the twelve troopers , who came down from the Newtown Park , camp. Wellington, on Monday to say good- ; bye to their many friends in South Canterbury returned north by the express lastevening, and were given a most enthusiastic send off as the train drew out of the station. The troopers looked well in their new khaki uniforms, the grey bandoliers across the tunic adding quite a business look to their get up. The men enjoyed their short trip here very much, and appeared to thoroughly appreciate the warmth of their send off. Among the Timaru troopers selected for service in the Transvaal is Mr 6. Cecil Talbot, second son of Mr George Talbot, Kingsdown. He has been on the staff of the N.Z. Loan Co. for a number of years, and as he .was so well liked by his fellowofficers it waT~decided that he should not —cleave without some mark of the esteem in which he was held- As he was unable to get home for a day or two Mr White forwarded him yesterday the-memento from the Timaru staff, and it is one which he will always value. This, is the second son of Mr Talbot's who goes forth to fight the battles of the Empire.
