This year we ask for a total vote of £80,555, namely, £25,---000 under the Consolidated Fund and £55,---555 under the Public Works Fund. As honourable members are aware, the duty of expending this money is entrusted to the several Education Boards, the only works directly controlled by the Government being the Industrial and Native Schools, and the school for deaf mutes. Native schools were erected last year, or are now in course of erection, at Parengarenga, Tapuacharuru, Oromahoe, Touwai, Rakamanga Raorao, Waitapu, and Teharoto, also additions at Nuhaka and Koroniti, and the Maungatapu School was ret t moved to Papa-moa. The . expenditure on- harbour works was trifling ( in amount, being only £365. Oollingwood, etc. The vote for harbour . defences last year was £10,000, but owing t to the military authorities being so much > occupied with the despatch of the Contin- . gents to South Africa and other matter*. . less attention was given to our harbour deg fences than would otherwise have been tho . case, so that the expenditure fell a good T deal short of the vote. A large amount j of work is required this year, including the 3 construction of a new battery at Welling--1 ton m a more advantageous position than . any of the existing forts, also some very , necessary worki of defence in connection , with our chief coal porta. CONCLUSION. > members may rest assured . that the allocations of the money for the : various works has received most careful , consideration, and while there may be some i disappointment with regard to the amounts i set down for particular works, lam confident that it will be admitted that the all location has been made upon a fair basis i and with a view to promoting the best interests of the colony.
