_ Per; Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 16. - The dead body of an infant, a day or two old, was found on the beach to-day. Hicks' evidence was taken at the hospital. He says that the train went on to the grade slowly, at not more than two miles an hour, and he pat on the brakes after leaving Kaitoke. He did not hear the engine whistle for brakes, but kept them on hard. He states that he was fully conscious all the time he was lyiag under the wreckage, and suffered great pain. At a meeting of the Trades' Cdancil Conference Mr B. O. Watson (Otago) was elected chairman. The idea of laying a cable to the East Capo lighthouse has been abandoned as the bottom is too rocky and the tide very strong. The Department thinks Mar-" coni's apparatus may be v6ry useful for communicating with such places as lighthouses but so far have been unable to get any. Play at the Chess Congress wbb resunned this morning. Mackay v. James, drawn; Mason (Wellington) beat Edwards (Dunedin); Barnes beat James; Cleland beat Kumer ; Brown and Earee, drawn; Mackay v. Still, unfinished. Kumer made a capital fight against the champion till his 37th move, which was weak, and he resigned shortly afterwards. The third round starts at 7.30 p.m. OHRISTCHUKCH, April 18. The funeral of the late J. J. M. Hamilton, district agent for the Public Trust Office, took place this afternoon, and was very largely attended. Having been District Grand Superintendent for Canterbury (Sew Zealand Constitution) there was a very large gathering of Masons. Wreaths were sent from the Premier, the Government Departments, and a number of Masonic Lodges. The Government were represented by the Hon J. McGowan. To-day the members of the Canterbury and North Otago police force presented ex Inspector JBroham with a handsome silver salver.
