+ _ ENGLAND V. NEW SOUTH WALES. United Pres3 Association— Per Eleciric Telegraph— Copyright. Received June 17th, 7.40 p.m. Sydnby, June 19. The weather cleared up, and about 20,000 persons were present. The ground was m a bad state, the centre being almost a bog. The English team were : —Back : Martelli; three-quarters : Doran, Bucher, Nicholls, and Adamson ; halves : Mullineux and Cooksou ; forwards : Stout, Jarman, MeGowan, Gib3on, Betson, Gray, Ayresmith, and Fancourt. New South Wales :— Back : Row ; three-quar-ters: Spragg, Shortland, and White; five-eighths: Ward and O'Donnell; half: Boyd ; forwards : Street, Kelly, Davis, Wheeler, Gardner, Marks, Webb, and Ellis. The game was a capital one, but at the end of the first spell it was made manifest that there was a lack of condition on the part of the Englishmen. Their passing and line work were excellent, while the forwards displayed line dribbling. They drew first blood off a mark by Cookson, from which Martelli obtained a goal by a well-judged kick. In the second spell New South Wales assumed the aggressive, and gradually kept the visitors on the defensive throughout. j Ward, an ex-New Zeaiander, was the I hero on the local side. The Englishmen frequently relieved by punting, the locai men giving them penalty kicks. The forward play of the local men was at times brilliant, but on the whole patchy. Gardiner passed to Ward m the visitors' 25, and the New Zeaiander cleverly ran m and secured a try. Bpragg failed to convert from a difficult angle. Just before time the Englishmen made a good passing rush, but Ayresmith had no run m him. As he made a straight line for the New South Wales goal -he was overtaken just m time to prevent a try. Final result— England 4 points, New South Wales 3 points. Per Press Association. OHRISTCHURCH, June 18.
