WESLEYAN CENTORY (JOMMEN ORATION MOVEMENT.
From an advertisement which appeau m another column, particulars are given of the local services which are to be held m connection with the above movement. These will be conducted by the fiev. O. H. Garland (organising secretary) who will be assisted by several ministers and prominent laymen representing circuits m South Canterbury. Ihe movement is world-wide, and is intended to promote the work of the church, spiritually and financially, so as to secure increased facilities for parrying out new enterprises with the incoming of the new century. In England, where the scheme had its first inception, marvellous success has been secured. Although only a few mouths have passed since the first meeting was held, nearly £750,000 have been promised, and prominent leaders of the church, such as ihe Rev. Hugh Price Hughes and others, are confident that the total amount when the effort is closed will be nearer a million and a half than a million, the amount first proposed to be raised m the old land. In America, the Methodist Episcopal Church aims at raising four millions sterliog. All the Australasian colonies are engaged m similar efforts. At the last conference, it was resolved that £30,000 should be the amount to be raised m this colony, 60 far the movement has met with considerable success, and meetings ie Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington and other places have proved to be worthy ol the best traditions of the church as sea sona of great spiritual power and blesa Ing. - nexion, and possesses pulpit and plat- . form gifts of a popular order. Three services are set down for to-morrow, that m the afternoon being specially arranged 3 for young people but all others, we under- . stand, will be heartily welcomed. The anthems fcr the day will be "Preserve Me O «od " (Salaman), " Radiant Morn" (Woodward), musical prelude at 6.25 p.m , "Great and Marvellous" (Gaul), after Benediction chorus " No Shadows Yonder" (Gaul). On Monday evening a fellowship and testimony meeting will be held, and on Tuesday evening a great public meeting for the advocacy of [ the financial and general claims of the [ movement. Doubtless many besides adherents of the WeaNwan Church will . embrace the opportunity to be present at some of the services as announced, and take part m the proceedings on an | occasion so unique as that referred to ; above.
