Mr Wilkinson, Government native agent, is kept busy filling m claims and explaining the provisions of the Act. The Auckland Court is getting through the claims more quickly, through claimants coming better prepared with evidence. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 2. A child named John Hill, aged two years, was badly burned some days since, and has succumbed to his injuries. The Taranaki annual regatta which was held today was very successful. The champion whaleboat race was won by Waitara, with Clifton a good second Clifton secured most of the rowing events. WELLINGTON, February 2. The Railway Department have received word that part of the Teremakau bridge has been washed out, and the structure is unsafe for traffic. No damage, however, has been done on the Keef ton and Hokitika lines. The Industrial Department has been informed that a company has lately been formed 1n England to manufacture a new material called volenile, which is of great value for machinery and npplU ances required to resist high temperature. It has seven times the resisting power to electricity or vulcanite. The material chiefly used m the manufacture is fish oil, and the company, if Buffinient inducement offers, proposes to establish a branch m Jsew Zealand, which would have a great effect on the development of the fishing trade. An X rays apparatus is now m constant use at the hospital with great success. REEFrON, February 2. In connection with the recent illicit still cases here there is a strong feeling against the persons who gave the information to the authorities, and that Jennins, who is a respectable man 52 years old, a native of Nelson, was entrapped. The evidence elicited at the trial of Jackson on Monday showed that the latter engaged him while he (Jennine) was under the influence of drink under a false name. Public opinion is so excited that a petition to the Minis* ter of Justice to release Jennens is being numerously signed, not one person reluaipg,

The losses of stock are inconsiderable. DUNEDIN, February 2. Benjamin Lyons, a platelayer, .aged 56, was killed by being run over by a tiain on the railway near Balclutha. Ue was very deaf, and did not hear the train whistle or the call from his mate as the train approached.
