BANKRUPTCY RETURNS.

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, January 23. The bankruptcy statistics for Otag;o for 1898 show that there were 55 bankruptcies on petitions of debtors and 13 adjudications on petitions of creditors. Thirty-two orders for immediate discharge were granted, and m nine cases the orders of discharge were suspended. The total amount of unsecured liabilities involved m thn above bankruptcies was £32,550 8* 9i, against which were unsecured assets to the amount of £17,862 9s 31. Secured assetß amounted to £<20,729 12s Id ; assets, other than secured, realised £9446 10s8d ; the dehts proved amounted to £140,425 4s Id. During the year £4502 Us was paid m dividends, hut this does not refer exclusively to estates which came into the assignee's hands since January Ist. 1898
