THE SOUTHLAND SHOW.
Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, December 13. The Southland Metropolitan Show opened to-day. The weather was oppressively hot, and thunderstorms with beneficial rain occurred m the back country 1 . During the afternoon, one of these broke over Gore, and latterly enveloped Invercargill, giving a couple of hours good rain. Only cattle and sheep were judged to-day. There was not a large attendance. The principal awards were as follows:— Mr R. Grieve showed the champion shorthorn bull, and Mr A. Beaven the champion cow. The Ayrshire championships both went to Mi James Gait. Messrs R. and A. Officei took both championships for Polled Angus. The Five Rivers Estate had the beat of the fat beasts shown. In Lincoln sheep Mr J. B. Button took all the awards. Border Leicester champion ram t Mr J. McCrostie; do ewe, Messrs McKerchar Brothers ; Romney Marsh, champion ram, Mr J. B. Logan ; do ewe, Hon. W. * Holmes. The Shropshire awards all went to G. Reid and Sons Cheviots, champion ram and ewe, Messrs Holder and Awdry. The ilon. W Holmes was the only exhibitor m cross breds.
