Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, December 10. The Kapanga mine return is279ozs, value £310 ; the Hauraki return, including crushing from the Union Beach, is 4400z5, value £1320. The Auckland Rifle Battalion and Mounted Rifles were inspected to-day m the domain by the Minister of Defence and Colonel Pole Penton, and also exercised m field drill. The Navals are encamped at Fort Cautley. WANGANUI. December 10. At the Police Court yesterday, Robert Parker, of Christchurch, private detective, was charged on the information of George Campbell, clerk to Ryans, the well-known bookmakers, with perjury said to have been committed at Wanganui m March last, m a case against Conway for using obscene language. Parker then swore that he never received money from a bookmaker to be permitted to remain on racecourses. Evidence was given by Campbell, Downey, and Ryan to the effect that they had bribed Parker. It was elicited that bookmakers m various parts of the colony had guaranteed the expenses of the prosecution of Parker, who was said to be " a bit of a nuisance to bookies." Parker adhered to the evidence he had previously given. The Magistrate, Mr Kettle, dismissed the information, remarking that the evidence was wholly and absolutely unreliable ; it flowed from a polluted source. WELLINGTON, December 10. About forty unsuccessful miners returned from Klondyke by the Aorangi. Some of them landed here, but most of them went on to Sydney. Only one of those on board had any success. Some were so hard up that they were thankful to work their passage. All payable claims are taken up. The Aorangi, from Vancouver, via Honolulu and Suva, arrived this morning, with 33 passengers for New Zealand and 73 for Australia. She brings a very heavy mail and full cargo. CHRISTCHURCH, December 11. The Hon. John McKenzie left for Wellington last night. DUNEDIN, December 10. John Russell, aged 22 years, employed at quartz mining at Deep Stream, was drowned by the upsetting of a boat on the Taieri river. December 11. Francis Joseph Thomson, aged 14 years, was killed by being run over by a tram car on the Mornington line. He was standing on the step of the front platform and when the car was restarting after a stoppage he fell under it m some way, the car going over his thighs. Notwithstanding that the Molyneux river is over 12ft above its normal level and some dredges are unable to work, good returns are reported from others. The Clyde dredge return is 220z of gold, Golden Beach 350z 6dwt6grs, Otago 270z 12dwt, Enterprise 28oz 6dwt 15grs, and Golden Terrace (Shotover) 250z 13dwt 20grs. A man named Jones died m the hospital from injuries received by a fall from a ladder. He was a sailor and had permission when ashdre to sleep m the loft Of the tramway stables. He was seen coming down the ladder, and a few minutes afterwards was found at the bottom m a helpless condition. He was taken to the hospital where he died. Little is known of the man, but it is re ported that he is a son of Mr Jones who was a well-known ho telkeeper m Dunedin m the days of the gold discoveries.
