Per Press Association. < AUCKLAND, March 14. Mr Kobert Sargeant, aged 60 years, who was employed by Mr F. Williams, a fish dealer, slipped m Wyndham street and fell under the feet'of a horße,whieh lashed out and struck him on the temple, and dragged one wheel of the cart across his throat, death being almost instantaneous. The following are the gold returns :— New Golconda, 12 loads of quartz for bullion valued at £80; New Zealand "Talisman crushed 400 tons for gold valued at £1291 ; Royal Oak of Hauraki •crushed 20 tons for 7280zs of bullion ; -Golden Pah 17 tons for gold valued at ;£7B. Over 50 Austrians who are en route for the northern goldfields arrived from Sydney by the Waihora. I \Flannagan, of Paeroa, nearly poisoned . himself by eating match heads owing, it is said, to family troubles. Dr Buckly attended, administered an emetic, and after a considerable time succeeded m relieving the sufferer. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 14. Bell's dairy factory, Henwood Eoad, owned by Mr J. Crockett, was destroyed by fire at half past 1 o'clock on Sunday morning. Insurances are, building . £200, plant £400, m the Norwich Union. 'The loss is estimated at 50 per cent. ?.xnore. The supposed cause of the fire is ;^a Bpark from the boiler fire. NAPIEK, March 14. .Thomas Peddie, licensee of the Clarendon hotel, was fined £2 for exposing liquor for sale after hours, and his license waß endorsed. John C. Smith, of the Empire hotel, was fined £1 for a similar offence, and his license is also to be endorsed. WELLINGTON, March 14. The Cabinet have passed a vote of £5600 for telegraph connection between Auckland and New Plymouth, and also authorised £22,000 to be spent on railway rolling stock. The reward for the discovery of the horse-stabber at Christchurch has been Increased to £500. The annual session of the New Zealand branch of the Medical Association, begins to-morrow. The examination of military cadets to undergo a course of training m England, resulted m the selection of Messrs Pilkington (Auckland) and Wall (.West Coast.) Among the Klondyke passengers by the Miowera were Butland, the wellknowD foctballer,and Captain Robertson, late harbourmaster at Onehunga, whc represents an Auckland syndicate. The Government have decided tc establish a field battery for service where'needed, with head-quarters profr ably m Wellington. New guns anc equipment of the most modern patterr will be provided. The volunteer forct is to be increased, and the regulation! altered m the direction of increasing th< 4i umber of parades.
The Executive will not consider the j cases of the murderers Philpott and i Clemen ts till the Governor returns at the end of March. Mr Justice Williams has tendered his resignation of the Presidency of the Arbitration Court as a prelude to taking a trip Home. . Mr Malcolm Ross, Mrs Ross, and party made a successful ascent of Ngaruhoe and Ruapehu. They got a good view of the inside of the crater of the former. They found a lake m Ruapehu crater, quite cold and with ice floating m it.and believe that the reports of steam issuing from time to time were merely caused by ashes blowing about. A quantity of rainbow trout were liberated m the mountain streams. The Cabinet have not yet definitely refused to hear Mr Jellicoe plead the cause of Philpott, but have relegated the question till the Governor's return from the south. The cost of the field battery the Government have decided to obtain will be about £8000. The 7 o'clock train from Wellington collided with a sheep train at Mangamahoe, owing to the brake of the latter not working. The stock train engine was disabled, but the mail train went on. Mr Justice Williams gets 12 months' leave of absence. His Honour Judge Ward acts m his place while away. The total amount to be spent on improving the defences is £25,000. CHRISTCHURCH, March 14. The Premier is to deliver a political address at Lyttelton on Saturday night.
