» — — Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 8. Messrs Bagnall, Luke, and Farrell were elected members of the Board of Education. An inquest was held on the body of Henry John Hartnoll, well known m commercial circles. The evidence showed that he had taken "rough on rats." He left a letter to his wife, stating that he intended to destroy himself, and that the letter to her would be found under his pillow. He was mentally depressed at being out of employment. He was formerly with Messrs Nathan Co. for years. He leaves a widow and nine children. The verdict was that deceased took poison while temporarily deranged. Deceased was brother to the Hon. William Hartnoll, a member of the House of Assembly m Tasmania. WANGANUI, March 8. Mr H. L. Marsack, of Auckland, lias been appointed inspector of abattoirs and dairies for Wanganui. The Wanganui Rifles are only sending three men to the Rifle Association meeting at Oamaru; and the Alexandra Cavalry send two. WELLINGTON, March 8. During the bye-election m Dunedin 9 Mr Begg, m the course x of his address, alleged that the Government secured
his dismissal from the firm of Campbell and Co. The Premier has received a letter from the firm regretting that the accusation should have been made, and stating that it has not the slightest foundation. The Warrimoo arrived at 6 a.m. to-day, after a fine weather passage from Vancouver, where she left at 10 p.m. on February 13th. Among the passengers is Sir Henry Berkeley, Chief Justice of Fiji, who visits the colony for the benefit of his health. The Police Commission took the evidence of two witnesses this afternoon who deposed to seeing two persons going into local hotels on Sunday. They gave names, and one said that he had counted 210 people entering an hotel one Sunday. A sad shooting accident happened at Akatarawa, near Upper Hutt, this morning. Two brothers, Frederick and William Lee, were mustering cattle when a bull turned on them. Frederick, aged 18, discharged a gun at it, then climbed a tree, and called to his brpther to reload. While the latter was handing the weapon to his brother a branch caught the trigger and the gun went off, the charge landing m Frederick's right side, death being almost instantaneous. The election excitement runs at fever heat, and to-day a large crowd at the approach to the wharf was addressed by the supporters of either side. At the conclusion the assistance of the police had to be evoked to maintain order. The total number on the roll is 17,522, and it is expected that nearly 15.000 will vote. The Returning Officer expects io declare the result about 9 o'clock to-morrow night. CHRISTCHURCH, March 8. The Railway Classification Board of Appeal , concluded its sittings here today, having heard 26 appeals. The members leave for Dunedin to-morrow. Dr Russell, charged with procuring a miscarriage, was committed for trial today. Bail was accepted, the accused m £500, and four sureties of £125 each. •The accused as he left the Court, was cheered by the crowd.
