The steamer Duke of Devonshire, 2482 tons, ' just arrived from London (March 31st) with a full cargo, struck an unknown obstacle on leaving the harbour, and had to be beached on Friday Island. She has a big hole m her side, and has 24ft of water m No.l hold and Bft m No. 2; the others are dry. She lies m a dangerous position. Salvage steamers have gone to her assistance. Probably the whole of her cargo will have to be discharged. The Duke of Devonshire lies m still water on a sandy bottom. The extent of damage cannot be ascertained until the cargo is removed, but the damage to the cargo must be very serious.
