RICCARTON NOTES.

(By Telegraph.) ' CHRISTCHURCH, November 4. The weather promises to be fine foi the opening spring meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club to-morrow. The town is crowded with visitors. The starters m the New Zealand Cup, with their riders, will be as follows : — North Atlantic, 9st, Derrett Sternchaser, Bst 61b, Stratford Impulse, Bst 51b, G. Smith Skirmisher, Bst 41b, W. Clark Pegasus, 78t 101 b, Davis Aldershot, 7st 81b, Kae Magazine. 7st 61b, A. Wilson Marino, 7st 61b, Connop Gipsy Grand, 7st 61b, Pyne The Artist (31b extra), 7st 51b, C. Jenkins Quiltiri (51b extra), 7st Eurocyldon, 7st, McCoombe Chaos (31b extra), 6st 131 b, T. Buddi combe. Lady Zetland was scratched for the Cup at 5 p.m. to-day. For the Cup the Star tips — Gipsy Grand 1 Impulse 2 Marino 3 There was a fairly large' number of spectators on the course this morning to witness the final gallops, most of which were performed over short distances. Nearly all the work was done on the grass, which was m first-class order, and it says much for the good management that it has stood the severe test it has been put to during the last fortnight. Cutts again started proceedings by despatching Pegasus and Golden Fleece for a fast mile. The filly then pulled up, and Pegasus continued for another circuit at half-Dace. Impulse was allotted two rounds at a steady pace. Marino galloped a mile and a quarter m 2min 16sec. Quiltiri outpaced Couranto m a mile, the last six furlongs being done m lmin 22sec. Lady Zetland and Chaos finished fast over the last six furlongs of one circuit, the latter not showing to so much advantage as his companion. Magazine was restricted to half-pace work for one round. The Artist was too good for Lord Vivian at the end of a mile, done m lmin 52sec. Skirmisher, withSolano for a companion for the first half, and Neroli for the last half, completed a mile m lmin 48sec, which would have been better had he not been eased off for the last furlong. Gipsy Grand, Warrington, and Emmeline jumped off at the mile post, and ran together till Murlin joined m between the four and five furlongs post. Gipsy Grand then left the others, and with the filly finished the distance m lmin 46sec. The scratching for the New Zealand Cup at 5 p.m. was Magazine, not Lady Zetland as previously telegraphed. Lady Zetland's weight is Bst 51b, and her rider will probably be F. Cochrane. It was reported to-day that Euroclydon, Quiltiri, and Pegasus would be scratched for the New Zealand Cup. At a late hour to-night neither had been withdrawn, but probably Quiltiri will not go to the post. Whittaker will ride Chaos. i There was little betting to-night. Impulse remained firm at 5 to 1, at which price he was supported, and Gipsy Grand and Sternchaser have hardened. The following are quotations:— s to 1 against Impulse (taken), 7 to 1 against Marino and North Atlantic, 8 to 1 against Skirmisher and Gipsy Grand, 10 to 1 against Lady Zetland and Sternchaser, 14 to 1 against Chaos, The Artist, and Euroolydon, 15 to 1 against Pegasus.
