THE SHELTER SHED.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMARU HERALD. Sir,— Mr Tennent says that the words "and others" were unanimously struck! out, and " the minutes referred toby Mr Gillies plainly record the fact." All I can say is that the minutes as read at the meeting the other evening do not record the fact. They record the resolution as quoted by me, and that two individuals whose names are given, objected to seamen being included, but it is not recorded that these two individuals even proposed an amendment, or that their opinion was sympathised with by others. If there is more on the minutes than this it was not read at the meeting. Further, my conversations with Mr Tennent on the subject were after the preliminary meeting, and he never stated that seamen were to be excluded, but the opposite, and if he pleases 1 will recall circumstances to his recollection m proof thereof. Moreover I attended at the opening of the shed, and nothing was then said about excluding seamen, or I should have spoken out my mind. If the public were not misled I know 1 have been most thoroughly. Mr Tennent has not attempted to give any reasons for the exclusion of seamen, and until that is satisfactorily done 1 must hold by my opinion, that it is a piece qj selfishness utterly unworthy of the men who have had this shed provided for them ; which I would like to see them repenting of and showing a little brotherly kindness toward a class deserving of some consideration at their bands. Whethpr the public sympathise with my opinion or not I have felt bound to give expression to it, and I have to thank you for giving me the opportunity of doing so. I am, etc., \Vm. Gillies.
