WRECK OF THE BARQUE THURSO.
(By Telegraph.)
GREYMOUTH, August 7
The barque Thurso was wrecked while being towed out, bound for Capetown with a cargo of timber. She was slightly out of the channel when the two hawsers parted, and she drifted on to the tiphead. A number of holes were knocked m her bottom, and the vessel became full of water. The first mate was injured by some timber when the tow ropes parted, and he was taken to the hospital. The vessel and cargo are insured.
The Thurso lies m the same position. Three hawsers were broken to-day m trying to shift her. She lies nearly alongside the north breakwater, apparently stuck m the stones. A line was made fast to keep her from going into the fairway. The main hold is full of water, ft is supposed that the is injured by bumping; on the stones. The forward compartmnt is dry. The tug will make another try at 11 o'clock to pull her up the river, out of the road, the water on that side of the river being deep. The Thurso is insured m the New Zealand office for £2500.
