Meanwhile the fellow side will be retained m Sydney. The latter at present appears to be m good condition. Another lot of meat has been forwarded to Pahiti. It is claimed that a thousand carcases can be pi*eserved for a few shillings, and an obvious advantage is that when discharged from a steamer the joints can be cut and hung, it is averred, almost any length of time. THE ELDORADO DISASTER.

Melbourne, August 6,

The last messages of the buried miners created a painful sensation. No one m the district for a moment believes that the messages were written at 6 o'clock on the same Saturday morning as the disaster occurred. Miners as a rule are not given to writing such hopeless messages two hours after they find themselves blocked m. Again, knowing that they were entombed for at least a few days, they would husband their scant food and supply of tea. The messages were clearly not written on the billies until the tea was exhausted. The general opinion is that the poor fellows wrote their last letters days after the disaster occurred.

A GANG OF INCENDIARIES,

The Warnambool incendiarists have confessed to starting sixteen fires, one of which caused a loss of £800. In several cases where a fire did not burn properly the men returned to the premises, and relighted it. In order to prevent the possibility of the flames being extinguished m one case, they locked the doors of the fire brigade station and threw the keys away. They used to hide until a crowd gathered, and then mix amongst it. Campbell, one of those arrested, was enrolled as a member of the vigilance committee formed to capture incendiaries. He said that they had no object m burning down buildings, but had been drinking and were imbued with a spirit of devilment. SPORTING NOTES. Daimio is a strong favourite for the Steeplechase at 3to 1. Balboro is next m demand at 6 to 1. Seagirt is a non-acceptor for the Melbourne Cup. i At the annual meeting of the Victoria Racing Club, the ballot upon the totalisator resulted m an overwhelming majority m favour of legalising the use of the machine.
