SUPREME COURT.

(By Telegraph. )

WELLINGTON. August 5

Addressing the Grand Jury, the Chief Justice referred to the fact that the cases on the calendar were not quite so numerous as usual. Alluding to tne Masterton murder case, he said the question of the sanity of the accused, Andrew J. Somerville, might be raised, but that was a matterfor the consideration of the Judge, and not for the jury to consider. As to the case m which Andrew Kennpdy and Joseph Jewett were charged with causing the death of a woman m a Chinaman's house by throwing a lamp at her, His Honour said the evidence .pointed to one rather than both of the accused, but as it was of a curious character the better course for the jury was to find a true bill against both men, if they were satisfied that there was a case to answer. The case against Davey, charged with falsely applying a trade mark to a machine-covering was a remarkable one, m that the legislature had placed the onus upon the defendant to prove that he had authority to use a trade mark. All the prosecution had to prove was that a trade mark had been applied. He thought that it was remarkable fov the legislature to assume that a mark had been falsely applied and place the onus on the accused.

True bills were found m both the Masterton and Haining street cases.
