WELLINGTON, August 3,

The man Alexander died m the hospital early this morning. No season is at present known for the suicide. Dickson, a grocer, who recently filed, pleaded guilt/ to-day to a charge of not keeping proper books of account. He urged that he had erred through ignorance, and the Magistrate remanded him for report by the probation officer. •

August 4.

At the inquest on the body of Alexander, who shot himself on Friday night, no evidence was given to account for the act. The jury returned a verdict of " suicide by gun-shot."

WESTPORT. August 3.

The coal export for the week ended today was 5110 tons. The Westpoit Coal Company sent 4600 tons, and the Cardiff Company 610 tons.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 4.

Truth, against which the Commissioner of the Government Life Insurance Department instituted proceedings for the recovery of damages m respect of certain statements regarding the securities m the Department, apologises for these statements m its issue last night, and for allegations concerning the Public Trust and Post Office Savings Bank's securities; ' '

The wholesale hardware merchants and ironmongers have written to Mr.D. Pjnkerton, M.H.R., asking his assistance m an effor.t to prevent the sudden alteration m the tariff which is sui;e>to entail loss on them. They ask til I the end of the year to dispose of their stock m hand, and point out tha,t new stocks coming forward, not required for consumption, could be bonded until 1896.
