PAREOBA. The second annual meeting of the Pareora Licensing Committee was held m the courthouse, Temuka, yesterday. Present— Messrs Talbot, Richardson, Mcc, Quinn, Stowell, McLean, Morris, and Clark. In the absence of the vhairr

man, Mr C. A. Wray, S.M., Mr Talbot was voted to the chair. The chairman read a memo, appointine Mr McLean on the Committee m place of Mr J. R. Milne, who had lost his seat through being absent from two meetings. All the renewals were granted without comment, except the following : — E. H. Brewer, Royal hotel, Temuka. Mr Perry appeai-ed m support of this renewal, and Mr White appeared for the Crown Brewery Company, and asked that the renewal be refused and a temporary transfer be made from M. Mulhern to Thomas Lucas. The committee decided that as it was a dispute between the parties they had nothing to do with it. The chairman thought they would be doing their duty m renewing the license to the applicant. The report on the house was very favourable. — The application was granted to Mr E. H. Brewer. This concluded the business. Mr Morris asked if the date could be altered from the first Monday m each quarter, as it was yeiy inconvenient to some of the committee living up ctfuhtry. The chairman said that the date had been fixed by the returning officer for three years, and therefore could not be altered. ("By Telegraph.") CHRISTOHURCH. June 3. At the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee for Christchurch district tp-day, the applications for renewals of licenses m respect of several hotels against which informations for Sunday trading had been laid by Prohibitionists were adjourned till after these charges had been heard m the Magistrate's Court. These were — Burkes, Prince of Wales, Eastern, Tattersalls, White Hart, Caversham, New Zealander, Royal, ] White Swan, and Zetland Arms Hotels. Upon the application of T. Popham for J a renewal of tli,e license of Coker's { Hotel being called, a petition signed among others by Bishop Julius, the Revs. F. Knowles, W. Morley, J. Elmslie, H. R. Dewsbury, A. W. Averill, J. Dawson, A. Mitchell, F. W. Isitt, J. Hoskin, J. Orchard, Brigadier Hoskinand two captains and a lieutenant of the Salvation Army was read. It made certain allegations with regard to the conduct of one of the bars. The application was postponed till June 24th when it was agreed that evidence m regard to the petition should be heard. With the exception of two cases which were postponed for effecting improvements m premises all the other applications for renewals were granted. A letter was read from the Prohibition League, stating that there were few ? if any, of the houses m the district which did not possess two or more bars, whereas the Act contemplates licensing one bar only. The chairman said the committee had nothing to do with the question. The committee issued a license for one bar to each house, and if there were more within the meaning of the Act, it was for the police io take action. Inspector Broham said that the matter was one which had been greatly discussed. He had himself when m Auckland taken the initiative and laid informations under the Act, but they were dismissed, and the same thing had been the case m other localities. He was of opinion after carefully looking into the matter, that there were no breaches of this section of the Act m Christchurch. If any person thought that there was abreach of the Act it was quite open for him to lay an information. j DUNEDIN, June 3. The City Licensing Bench refused all applications for extension beyond 10 o'clock. The Licensing Committee to-day granted renewals m all cases save that of Mrs Bram, Great Northern Holel, who was objected to on the ground that she had been convicted of selling without a license at the racecourse. IN\ ERCARGILL, June 3. At the annual licensing meeting all licenses were renewed for 10 o'clock.
