The New Hebrides Synod has resolved that, seeing that the matter of obtaining a mission steamer has been taken out of its hands by the action of the Victorian Foreign Mission Committee, and as the suitability of the vessel is not assured, it will leave the matter for the present m the hands of Victoria, to do its best m the interests of all concerned. The Revs. Lamb and Watt, of New Zealand, and the Revs. Robertson and McDonald, of Canada, dissented from the resolution. OBITUARY. Melbourne, June 3. Violet Varley (Mrs. J. Tapley), a well known actress is dead. She died m child-birth. A RICH MINE. The directors of the Central Mine, i Broken Hill, have examined the workings, and are* highly impressed with the promising character of the developments. In the 400 feet level the bulk of the assays for several days have averaged 57ozs of silver to the ton, and it is 1 impossible at present to compute the quantity of stone m sight. An important discovery is reported from a locality forty miles northwest of Coolgardie, where Menzies and a party of prospectors found four reefs running -parallel and intersected by a cross reef. This country has hitherto been untried. The cross reef is very rich.
