Count Kustorog, one of the richest land-owners m Russia, was shot dead m the public gardens at Minsk by another nobleman. FATAL EARTHQUAKE. Rome. May 19. A strong shock of earthquake was experienced at Florence. A panic occurred, but little harm was done. May 20. The damage by the earthquake at Florence is much more serious than was at first anticipated, and m the villages m the vicinity there is much loss of life. One church collapsed burying several who were devoted m prayer. THE FRENCH IN MADAGASCAR. Paris, May 20. News from Madagascar states that the French troops are steadily advancing from Mowanga with only trivial loss, and that the Hovas are displaying only a feeble opposition. THE SILVER QUESTION IN THE STATES. Washington. May 19. American silver men m seventeen States have agreed to plump for candidates pledged to legalise coinage m the ratio of 16 to 1. The mine-owners are said to have subscribed 1,000,000 dollars to assist the campaign. AN UNSAFE CANAL. Berlin, May 19. It is reported that the new canal from the Baltic to the North Sea is unsafe, rhe banks are breaking away and thou-
sands of yards of earth are falling into the water and blocking the passage. It is feared that this mishap will interfere with the official opening.
