TOWN & COUNTRY.

* The opening ot the season by th Timaru Golf Club is postponed from tc morrovr to Thursday, April 4th. A rather novel addition to the crew o the ship Blenheim was made on Satui day. The sailor on watch noticed ; strange cat jump aboard from the whai and after having a look round, go ashor again. He thought this very peculiai but his surprise was heightened whei he noticed the cat coming down th wharf again with a kitten m her mouth She sprang on., to -the ship, laid th kitten down on the, poop, and once mor went ashore. In a few minutes back sh came again with another kitten, wlncl she laid alongside the other, and the] proceeded to make herself and famil; quite at home. The steward and cre\ took a great fancy to their humble ship mates, and there is no doubt the ca will find very comfortable quarters oi the ship. ■» A middle-aged man jiiamed Huinphre; Freil was brought before Messrs Mos Jonas and Anthony Mills, Justices c the Peace, yesterday, charged wit] assault on a girl. The prisoner deniei all knowledge of the affair, mumblin ; something to the effect that he had beei too drunk to remember it. -Mr J W White appeared for the plaintiff, who, i was shown, was going home on Wednes day evening last between 9 and 10 o : elod when the defendant accosted her, am caught her by the arm. Had it not beei for a young man coming up at the tim a serious assault might have been com mitted. Witness did not know the pris oner, who seemed to be under the m fluence of drink. Detective Livingston gave the man a bad character, and sai< that the police had b^en informed o several similar case 3. The Bench sen tenced the prisoner to one month's haw labour, and said that men of tin prisoner's character must thoroughly understand that they could take n< liberties with passers-by. If they die they would be severely dealt with. Thii case should act as a severe caution t< men who are m the habit of frequenting the outlying parts of the town, and o acting the part of cowards and black guards m accosting unprotected women We have received from the Depart inent of Agriculture a batch of " Leaf lets for Farmers,"copies of which may b« had, free, from any stock inspector These latest issues are illustrated. From and after the 28th inst., the subagency of the Colonial Bank of New Zealand at Pleasant Point will be closed. By a printer's error m the South Canterbury Times last evening the time of the excursion train leaving Timaru for Waimate to-morrow was stated to be "9.50.". The train starts at "8.50 a.m.," and leaves Waimate on the return journey at 5.10 p.m. The fares are children Is, adults m charge of children 2s. We hear that a very large number of school children and many adults- are to pay a visit to Waimate Gorge. Mr C. A. Strack, headmaster of the Pleasant Point school, writes us to the effect that it was not , fair to other teachers to mention only his name m connection with the showing of the children around the town on the day of the Fairlie branch excursion. All the teachers m the Point-Fairlie district cooperated cheerfully and loyally to make the excursion interesting and useful to their charges. We beg to remind those interested that the ram and ewe fair, under the auspices of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, will be held at the Washdyke yards to-morrow, commencing at half-past 11 o'clock sharp.
