THE HALF HOLIDAY.
(By Telegraph.) AUCKLAND, January 18. The conference re the half-holiday met at noon. Representatives of three outside boroughs were present, also the Mayor of Auckland. The latter explained that the City Council refused to appoint delegates, and stated that he had telegraphed to Mr Reeves and had received a reply stating that he was appointed delegate by the Act, which cast upon him the duty of attending the conference. The Mayor was elected chairman, and moved an adjournment for one week to ascertain the legality of the position. •WELLINGTON, January \B. At the meeting of the City Council last night a deputation of shopkeepers waited on the members urging Wednesday as ! the half-holiday, ana presenting a petition signed by many thousands m favour of that day. They also drew attention to the great hardship which would be inflicted on the shop keepers at the Te Aro end of the town if they were obliged to close on Saturday. j Later on the Council considered the report of the public works- committee, which recommended Wednesday, but after considerable discussion Wednesday was rejected by the casting vote of the Mayor and Saturday substituted. A committee was set up to act with the Mayor at a conference on Monday which finally selects the day to be observed. The Mayor m giving his casting vote for Saturday said that the arguments heard had convinced him that Wednesday was the better day, but as he had declared for Saturday before his election, as chief Magistrate he would be consistent.
